The actor leaves, but the makeup doesn't (unless you're quick!)
After a long day of filming, the last thing an actor wants is to spend another hour in the makeup chair removing complex prosthetics. A makeup artist on set must be an expert not only in application but also in quick and safe removal. A mistake here can cause irritation, damage the skin for the next day, or delay the entire crew. Learn the essential techniques and solvents for efficiently and professionally removing heavy prosthetics and SFX makeup.
I. The Three Golden Rules of Quick Disassembly
To optimize the process without compromising skin safety, follow these principles:
-
Never Pull (Always Dissolve): Rule number one. Pulling on a prosthesis can tear off the top layer of skin (epidermis). Dissolvers are designed to break the chemical bond of the adhesive, not to force it.
-
It works in layers: Start with the outermost layer (the blood and colored makeup), then add the adhesive, and finish with the prosthetic material. This prevents spreading the makeup across the skin.
-
Post-Solvent Hydration: Solvents are inherently harsh. The final step should be to neutralize and restore the skin's moisture barrier.
II. Specific Techniques by Material
Each prosthetic material requires its own solvent and method:
Silicone Prosthesis / Bondo (High Resistance)
-
Key Solvent: Citrus/Oil Based Adhesive Remover (for Pros-Aide and silicone adhesives).
-
Quick Technique:
-
Apply the solvent with a cotton swab or a flat brush along the edge of the prosthesis . Let it work; you'll see the edge "lift" on its own.
-
Using the same brush, apply more solvent underneath the prosthesis as you slowly peel it off. The solvent should do the work, not you.
-
Once the prosthesis has been removed, use the same solvent to clean the sticky residue of the adhesive off the skin.
-
III. Express Disassembly Kit
These elements are your speed and safety guarantee:
- 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)
- Adhesive Remover (Oil/Citrus Based)
- Hot Facial Towels (Electric or Microwave)
- Mineral Oil or Coconut Oil
- Gentle Moisturizing Cream
-
Glue solvent. We recommend Bond Off by Ben Nye®.
De-production is the ultimate test of your professionalism. By mastering these quick and selective solvent techniques, you not only save valuable production hours and ensure continuity, but you also demonstrate essential respect for the actor's well-being. A freelance on-set makeup artist is someone who knows how to start and finish a job efficiently.
Make removal as smooth and quick a process as application!
See you on set!
