In character makeup and special effects, veins are not just simple blue lines. They are the "wiring system" that reveals a character's health, temperature, and, above all, chronological age . To achieve hyperrealistic realism, we must understand dermal depth : as we age, the skin loses collagen and becomes thinner, revealing a vascular architecture that remains hidden in youth.
Youth (0-25 years): Hidden Irrigation
In youth, the dermis is thick and subcutaneous adipose tissue is abundant. Veins are barely visible.
-
Location: They are only visible in areas where the skin is naturally thinner: temples (very soft), wrists and the backs of the feet.
-
Chromaticism: Very pale and diffuse greenish blues.
-
MUA 360 Technique: Don't draw lines. Use an airbrush with very diluted alcohol paint to create a subtle shadow . The vein should appear to be 2 mm below the surface.
Maturity (30 - 55 years): The Vascular Relief
The skin begins to lose elasticity. The veins begin to "show up", especially if the character performs physical exertion or has little body fat.
-
Location: * Temples: The superficial temporal artery appears (V or S shape).
-
Hands: The tendons and veins on the back of the hand begin to show relief.
-
-
Chromaticism: Desaturated blues and some violet hues in stagnant areas.
-
Technique: Use the stippling technique around the vein to integrate it, avoiding sharp edges.

Old age (60+ years): Transparency and "Marbling"
This is where the vascular map becomes the protagonist. The skin is almost like tissue paper ( parchement skin ).
-
Critical Location:
-
Periorbital: Fine veins in the eyelids and under the eyes.
-
Hands and Forearms: Varicose, tortuous veins with a real relief.
-
Legs: Appearance of telangiectasias (spider veins).
-
-
Color scheme: A blend of cobalt blue, violet, and olive green . Blood is darker and oxygen is lower, resulting in a cooler tone.
-
Technique: Draw the vein and then apply a very thin layer of Bondo or Glatzan over it to simulate the skin covering it. This creates an optical effect of real depth.
